What Is Ear Lavage?

Ear lavage (also known as ear irrigation) is a simple procedure that uses warm, sterile water or saline to safely flush out built-up earwax (cerumen) and debris from the ear canal. It’s ideal for patients with:

  • Hearing loss due to wax buildup
  • Ear fullness or pressure
  • Chronic wax accumulation
  • Failed at-home ear cleaning attempts

Common Symptoms of Earwax Buildup

  • Decreased or muffled hearing
  • Fullness or plugged sensation

What to Expect During Your Visit

  • Visit Duration: 15–20 minutes

  • Comfort Level: Mild pressure sensation; not painful

Is Ear Lavage Safe?

Yes—when performed by medical professionals, ear irrigation is a safe and effective alternative to cotton swabs or over-the-counter drops, which can push wax deeper or irritate the ear canal.

We do not recommend ear lavage if you have:

  • A history of ear surgery
  • A current ear infection
  • Known perforated eardrum

In those cases, we will recommend an ENT evaluation or alternate method of wax removal.
